I wanted to join IMI because it operates in extremely interesting niche industries. I could see that a career here would offer me a significant chance to play a part in the development of innovative, high quality products, and in selling those products to well-known, demanding customers.

I first came to IMI as an Intern, and after being successful, I was recommended to join the Global Graduate Development Programme. The programme has been fantastic. From the moment I began the recruitment process, I’ve never stopped being surprised by how much IMI cares about its people, and their development. The relationships with managers aren’t formal, and they’re happy to help you grow. In fact, I’ve found all the people here to be open, innovative, and positive, as well as honest, cooperative, flexible and clear about what they want me to achieve. And on the Programme, we get to really participate in the business.

You need to be prepared for really varied experiences. Through my placements, I’ve learned so much about the company and about myself. I’ve worked in Poland, Germany, the UK and Switzerland - each time in a different role, and in a fresh business. I’ve supported product launches, conducted market analysis, and acquired new customers as a Business Development Trainee. As a Business Analyst, I wrote a report about energy efficiency legislation across Europe, which has been used in investor meetings and by Strategy teams. I worked as a Continuous Improvement Coordinator, managing small projects to build a new stock control system and redesign an assembly cell in a factory environment. And as a Project Management Assistant and Buyer, I’ve personally led projects in support of the establishment of a new supply chain.

It continues to be a brilliant challenge to immerse myself in a new industry and a new business unit every six months. I discovered how to understand businesses quickly, identify both my development needs and the ways in which I can participate, and deliver great solutions - all at the same time. It’s a unique opportunity to gain an overview of IMI, and of course you get to learn about your strengths and weaknesses, work to develop both, and try enough roles that you can see where your professional interests lie. For me, I’ve realised I get most satisfaction from managing projects and working with external players, such as suppliers. I’m looking forward to developing a career in a customer-facing role, and I’ve already taken part in training to build up my leadership, management, presentation and creative skills, ready for all the exciting challenges ahead.
