Health, Safety and Environment

We are striving to improve our environmental performance on a number of key issues: accident prevention, energy/carbon management, waste & recycling and water use.

Responsibility Highlights

  • Safety Alerts & Stand-Downs

We don’t want to experience any accidents, but if we do have them, then we want to learn from the experience. To do this effectively, we have implemented the ‘Safety Alert’ system: if there is an accident where the injured person is away from work for more than three days (or if there is a dangerous near-miss), a meeting is held at the site concerned to raise awareness and an alert template is used to communicate the circumstances of the accident, root causes and lessons learned to all of IMI’s businesses.

    Safety Alerts & Stand-Downs

  • Project 20:20

Although we have more than 170 locations around the world, our 20 largest sites account for 75% of our CO2 emissions. To focus on this group we have established Project 20:20, in which these sites are identifying 20 excellent carbon reduction measures.

    CO2 footprint

By ensuring that responsible business issues are on the agenda at major business planning meetings, environmental and other responsible business considerations are, increasingly, a routine part of management decision making.

Health & Safety

We have seen excellent improvement in our lost time accident frequency rate* in recent years. In 2010, our rate had reduced to 0.25. It is a corporate requirement that H&S is the first item on the agenda of all business meetings. It is our target to reduce this rate to ≤0.22 by the end of 2012.

Energy/CO2

Our performance on energy & CO2 use is measured against our target to reduce our CO2 emissions by 10%** by the end of 2012. 2009 and 2010 have been very challenging years as a result of the extremely cold winters in many of our territories and as a result of the global economic climate. Our Project 20:20 is designed to help us achieve our targets.

Environment

Our environmental performance reflects the principles and objectives set out in our corporate policies and priorities and includes: The efficient use of natural resources, the use of environmentally sound resources, the optimum use of recycled materials.
