H & S and Energy

Safeguarding the people that work for the IMI Group is an essential part of our company culture. We also ensure our operations are designed and managed properly to minimise risk to the environment, adjacent communities and other stakeholders.

Responsibility Highlights

  • Replacement of old compressors

By replacing the old compressors with a frequent controlled compressor with heat recovery system we have seen the electricity power consumption for the Norgren Fellbach site drop from 295kW to only 165kW. Additionally, we have started to use the waste heat from the compressors to support the heating system - realising even further savings.

  • Severe Service take on leadership role

Our Severe Service business is implementing a global HS&E strategy and action plan to reduce overall accidents, including a global framework to manage health and safety risks for our field service personnel. This included new training and risk assessment tools which have helped to reduce the number of accidents.

  • Emergency response experience

Our employees at the Webber, Fluid Power site in the UK, have initiated and organised regular emergency response exercises (disaster incidents) to enable first aiders to get simulated experience of having to deal with major incidents on site. Emergency evacuation and chemical spill procedures are audited and have resulted in operational controls being improved.

Health & Safety

During 2011, we worked hard at building on the good performance of recent years. We now have 50 full-time health, safety and environmental professionals across the Group, up 11% on 2010.

Our overall lost time accident rates per 100,000 hours worked have fallen by over 50% since 2008 and in 2011 a further improvement of 20% was achieved. This performance demonstrates the continued clear focus and commitment at all levels across the Group on health and safety matters.

Energy Efficiency

During 2011, we have seen an 8% reduction to 3.3CO2 tonnes per 1,000 hours worked. Our target by the end of 2012 is 3.2 and as such we are now moving in the right direction. The milder winter weather in 2011 helped but the implementation of our energy measures has had a strong impact and will continue to do so into 2012 and beyond. Project 20:20 is set to continue for the foreseeable future – the aim is to identify 20 best practice projects to implement across IMI and to push for a 20% reduction in normalised CO2 emissions at our key sites, which account for 70% of our total energy consumption.
